Glen Mather recently went on a wheelchair distribution trip to Mexico City with The Wheelchair Foundation,a charity supported by Entrust Administration Services.
Below is a summary of his experience:
A slow parade of humanity shuffled in, a few carried, others with walkers and canes. Though many dressed in their finest clothes, this was a group that clearly did not have the financial resources to afford the latest in medical equipment. As they approached the wheelchair staging area, their smiles grew wider, as many had never had the luxury of what all of us take for granted mobility.
Throughout the past year, the Rotarians and other relief agencies across Mexico had screened thousands of individuals, from infants to grandparents, and prioritized those needing wheelchairs. Now, on this special day in August, their dream was about to be fulfilled.
Parents who carried their children on their back, imagined pushing them to school instead. Sons and daughters, caretaking their elderly parents, visualized wheeling them into the nearby park and church. They sat in eager anticipation, waiting for the speeches to end and the distribution to begin.
Finally, the first name was called, and volunteers rolled the brand new red wheelchair to the ten year old girl with cerebral palsy grinning from ear to ear. As I lowered the beautiful young girl into her chair, tears rolled down the cheeks of her mother, quietly murmuring her thanks. Her tears were matched by all of us that were fortunate enough to experience the power of giving firsthand.
Thanks to the Wheelchair Foundation, and many of our Entrust clients, we have made a difference in over 100 families’ lives in Mexico this month. We have pledged to deliver a container-load of chairs in 2009, and hope that many of our fris and associates join us in transforming the future of many more families in this coming year.
God bless you all,
Glen Mather, President
